Sleep is one of the most pressing issues faced by parents, and probably the topic most discussed. Sleep deprivation can make everything seem so much harder, and parents can often feel that they are doing something wrong if their baby does not sleep as much as they expected. The fact is, young babies need to wake often for a number of reasons, (as do older babies and children) and society has placed undue pressure on us as parents to change this behaviour. While we do all need sleep, there are ways to get the rest we need without using techniques that may damage our relationship with our children. The books and resources on this page look at gentle methods to help our babies sleep when appropriate, and ways for us to cope with day to day life when our children aren’t sleeping. |

Sleeping Like a Baby— Pinky McKay This book provides reassurance that it is quite normal for a baby to wake often, and that waking is in fact developmentally appropriate and at times essential. Pinky explores the range of normal and most parents would be reassured to see that their child is not doing anything unusual, and that they are not doing anything wrong. The book offers many suggestions for ways to gently change your child’s sleeping behaviour by meeting his individual needs and maintaining a respectful and loving relationship.
